Rules for issuing passports in Ukraine have been updated

On October 23, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted Resolution No. 13369, which amends the rules for issuing passports. Now, all entries in old paper passports will be made exclusively in Ukrainian — Russian will completely disappear from the documents. The resolution was voted for by 265 people’s deputies.

Previously, the information in passports was duplicated in Russian. This practice had existed since 1992, but it had long been outdated and no longer met modern standards.

In addition, the document updates the templates for foreign passports, bringing them into line with current legislation.

Since 2016, only ID cards have been issued in Ukraine, and passport books are no longer printed. However, in certain cases, for example, by court decision, a citizen may be issued a passport in the old format. Now, even in such documents, all inscriptions will be exclusively in Ukrainian.

If you already have a passport booklet with data in Russian, you do not need to change it — the document remains valid in full.
